One should consider the newer products because the company is heavily promoting and most likely providing better support for the newer products. My recommendation is if one likes the VPI performance, my own experience indicates that one should consider the Aries line of 'tables instead of the older HW-19 series.īefore I get flamed, note that I did not write that one should not consider a VPI altogether. I guess a discussion becomes a monologue if the other side fails to respond. I don't want to spend $900.00 to buy the all new glorious SDS.

I re-installed the SAMA and I needed to install a power switch as the SAMA does not possess one.Īll I wanted to know from VPI is how I can repair the blasted thing. I remove the PLC and the original motor works fine. I know the problem was not with the SAMA exclusively because I re-installed the original motor and the PLC still exhibits the same chattering problems. My PLC has the problem not being able to produce enough "whatever" (correct frequency, power, stuff, je ne sais quoi) to power my SAMA. I would like to agree with this, but I never attached the flywheel to the motor because there is not enough clearance between the plinth and the SAMA once the flywheel is attached.įor the belt stretch issue (my feeling is I think VPI doesn't believe there will a little bit of stretch in the belt), the platter rotational speed adjustment can be made with a PLC. I have searched the usual sites and found that there is a feeling at VPI that the buzzes are due to the owner not being able to correctly attach flywheel and other owner incompetence issues. I inquired about this in 2001 and I am still waiting for a response. I have a newer SAMA that buzzes occasionally. Once upon a time, SME made 'the best tonearm in the world.' That claim may have been justifiable through the 1960s and early 70s, but then something happened SME failed to keep pace with their competition in coping with the increasing popularity of low- to medium-compliance, highish-mass, moving-coil cartridges. I am still waiting for a response to my letter and fax. For example, when I moved from across the country for a job relocation in 1995, I asked VPI about a year before I moved about how do I re-pack the table because as many of you know, once the spindle is installed into platter, this is an irreversible process and the platter no longer fits into the original box. Turntable is in perfect working condition.
Stanton L720 cartridge and Stanton D71EE stylus in really good condition. It goes with highly regarded SME 3009 S2 improved tonearm (UK Shure). I do like the VPI HW-19 Mk III, but there have been problems not related to tweaks. Sony PS-2250 is a professional-type stereo direct drive turntable.
